How does public storage work...?

About halfway in between...theoretically, if you forget to pay, they can change the locks and not release the contents until you pay the past due amount, as of which time you then have access to your items again. If you do not bring the account up to date without a specified amount of time, they will auction off the contents (check out "Storage Wars" or "Auction Wars" on cable to see some auctions).
